Cyber security programme launched for school children

Jamshedpur: Safety Awareness for Everyone (SAFE) and Corporate Safety, Tata Steel, launched a programme on cyber security for the school children today at SNTI auditorium, Bistupur. Around 40 schools in the city participated in the programme.

The schools were represented by their computer teacher and two senior students. Mita Singhal, member SAFE, welcomed the guests and participants. Singhal has been instrumental in developing the overall module of the programme. She was assisted in this task by Sohrab Kersi Gandhi of Information Technology Services.

The programme was launched by Ruchi Narendran, chairperson, SAFE. Implementing cyber safety for students is one of her dream projects. On the occasion, Narendran said, �We exist in a rapidly developing world today. In such a scenario, while the web world has been a great source of staying connected, it has posed certain challenges before us. These challenges require awareness and mitigation. Therefore, I urge our teachers to take on this project and in turn cascade the knowledge to the students.�

The session was made an interesting one wherein Shreekant S Mokashi, chief, Group Information Technology Services, Tata Steel, and chief guest on the occasion, explained the vulnerability of each of the cyber users, by citing several anecdotes. He urged the audience to take advantage of the session and become equipped with the knowledge and means to protect oneself against falling prey to increasing rate of cyber-crimes.

Congratulating the apex team on conceptualizing, formulating and implementing a project that focusses on an issue which is the need of the hour, Shyam Sunder, chief, Corporate Safety, Tata Steel stressed upon the urgency and importance of the session for school children.

The session was taken forward by Singhal and Gandhi which included sessions on Safety measures that an individual should take while accessing social networking sites such as Facebook and Gmail, Securing home WiFi Network and Issues like phishing, defamation, financial frauds, and ATMs card safety.
