CII seminar: Corporate leaders brainstorm on business ethics

Jamshedpur : Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Jharkhand organised a seminar on Business Ethics on Tuesday at Beldih Club.

Addressing the inaugural session, T V Narendran, chairman CII Jharkhand and managing director, Tata Steel emphasised on the value of ethics and said that it is the way we do our businesses that matter and it reflects the way we are.

He said : � It is the fear of conscience is what stops us and not the fear of consequence �can perhaps be summarised as what ethics in corporate sector stands for. He was also of the view that the science of �moral values and ethics should be imbibed in the intuitions� to sensitise the younger generation�.

Fr Oswald Mascarenhas, JRD Tata Chair, Professor of Business Ethics, XLRI Jamshedpur delivered the theme address of the session. He pointed out ethics is not only a thought of rhetoric but should be a manner of practice .He pointed out that India has a rich ethical history that is more than five thousand years old. He also suggested that ethics should constitute programmatic moral actions.

Ethics constitute a set of inputs (ethical management to be taught in schools & colleges), processes (the corporate world in which new recruits work and learn ethical practices) and outputs (will result in ethical and moral individuals).

Mohit Kanchanbaras, associate director – Forensic, KPMG shared his views on the Industry Best practices & how Business Ethics plays a greater role in development of the self, industries & in all, the whole country.

N.K. Bhola, Regional Director (ER&NER), Ministry of Corporate Affairs was present in the seminar as the Guest of Honour who shared the initiatives of Government of India.

Other speakers present for the seminar were P C Ojha, VP � Vigilance, Balmer Lawrie & Co. ltd, Kallol Lahiri, head � Internal Audit & Ethics Counselor, Tata Motors and Tripti Roy, ethics counselor, Tata Steel.

The seminar was attended by more than 70 delegates from the industry in and around Jamshedpur.
