Alka Garg: Tale of Jamshedpur’s swinging star

Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City felicitates ace golfer

Jamshedpur, March 9: Her contact between club and ball is crisp, the swing perfect, as the ball sweetly sails over the hazard and lands 175-yards away on the green, right next to the flag, awaiting another easy birdie putt for the youngster.

Jamshedpur golfer Alka Garg seems to have what every champion does, the rare combination of the physical attributes of a fabulous golf swing and the insightfulness to plan and execute incredible shots, in the toughest of situations.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, she was felicitated by Rotary Club of Jamshedpur Steel City for her achievements in golf.

Garg has been playing golf for the last 14 years. She started early in 2008 and within one year she became the first lady golfer who became golfer of the year in just one year. Today she is playing at single digit i.e to handicap 8 at Golmuri and 9 at Beldih.

She has bagged many golf prizes. Her first win was the Sonnet Cup in 2008. She has won Sojitz , Nora Haley , Jamshedpur Challenge, Beldih Trophy , Captains Cup and the very prestigious Pervez Mehta while in 2023 Runners up Bhushan Raina Memorial Trophy and Jubilee Golf Best Gross 0-22.

Her journey continues. She has played many courses and always brought laurels for Jamshedpur Golf. To name some Kolkata, Delhi , Patna , Ranchi , Bhubneswar, Kashmir, Bangkok, Pattaya are some of the courses.

Thanks to Alka Garg, several women in the city have taken up golf with unexpected fervour. And with city golf courses opening doors of opportunity for use of the greens, the game is accessible to far more now than ever.

“Golf is a passion for me. The game has not only helped me showcase my talent but has also taught me lessons in discipline and patience,” said an elated Alka.

Few ladies would have said that a decade ago. Today, they take days off from work just to attend practice sessions.

The city is also well-equipped with golf infrastructure. Situated near Beldih Club, Beldih Golf Course consists of nine holes. The course has the Drive Range and Proshop facilities. The Drive Range at BOC Pavilion allows golfers to play under floodlights. This allows golfers to play after work during evenings. Golmuri Golf Course is situated near Golmuri Club, has 18- hole.

Garg said that facilities available in the city have played a key role in the promotion of golf. The game has come a long way in the steel city.  “We have a Golf Training Centre that is grooming the young talent in the city. I am thankful to my mentor and trainers, who helped me scale new heights,” signed off Garg.
