After scrutiny, 14 in fray for Ghatsila seat, 3 nominations rejected

Jamshedpur: The electoral picture for the 45-Ghatsila (ST) Assembly by-election became clear on Wednesday after the scrutiny of nominations, with 14 candidates remaining in the contest and three nominations rejected. The by-election, scheduled for November 11, has set the stage for a high-voltage political battle between the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alongside several independents and smaller parties determined to make their mark.

According to the District Election Office, the candidates whose nomination papers were found valid include Parameshwar Tudu, Shrilal Kisku, Babulal Soren (BJP), Somesh Chandra Soren (JMM), Parvati Hansda (People’s Party of India – Democratic), Mansa Ram Hansda, Narayan Singh, Vikas Hembram, Panchanan Soren (Bharat Adivasi Party), Basant Kumar Topno, Ramdas Murmu (JLKM), Manoj Kumar Singh, Vikram Kisku, and Ramkrishna Kanti Mahali, all of whom will vie for the tribal-reserved constituency.

Meanwhile, the nomination papers of Malati Tudu (Independent), Dukhiram Mandi (Aapki Vikas Party), and Mangal Murmu (Rashtriya Sanatan Party) were rejected during scrutiny due to irregularities in documentation.

The by-election was necessitated by the demise of sitting MLA and former minister Ramdas Soren of the JMM. The ruling party has fielded his son, Somesh Chandra Soren, in a bid to retain its traditional stronghold, while the BJP has re-nominated Babulal Soren, banking on the party’s organizational network and growing influence in the tribal belt.

Political observers believe the contest is likely to be a litmus test for both the JMM-led alliance and the BJP ahead of the 2025 state assembly elections. The entry of candidates from smaller regional outfits like the Bharat Adivasi Party and the People’s Party of India (Democratic), coupled with a high number of independents, could potentially split votes and make the contest more unpredictable.

With the final list of candidates to be announced after the withdrawal date, all eyes are now on Ghatshila, where campaigning is expected to intensify in the coming days as parties make their final push to woo tribal voters and consolidate their support base in this politically significant constituency.
