Woman commits suicide at Adityapur; husband, father-in-law arrested

Jamshedpur, Feb. 22: In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old woman Juli Pathak hanged herself after she was allegedly assaulted by her husband at her house on Road No 13 under the jurisdiction of the Adityapur police station area on lSunday late night.

The police arrested the husband Ranjit Pathak (30) and father-in-law Govind Pathak (58) after the deceased�s grandmother Indu Devi gave a statement to the police at the MGM Medical College and Hospital emergency.

According to information, Juli was married to Ranjit in December 2013. Although the bride�s parents gave the groom sufficient dowry, the accused would demand more dowry.

A mother of one-year-old child, Juli was found hanging from the ceiling fan at her house on Sunday when the husband, who works in an industrial unit at Adityapur, was at home.

The accused had taken the woman to the MGM Medical College Hospital by 10 p.m., where the doctors on the emergency duty declared her to be brought dead.

This morning the police turned up at the medical college hospital and sent the body to the MGM Medical College mortuary for post-mortem after taking a statement from the deceased’s grand-mother Indu Devi, who claimed that Ranjit and his father would demand dowry in cash and would torture her grand-daughter for not meeting the demands.

Peeved over the incident, the family members of the victim and sympathizers beat Ranjit as he appeared in the medical college hospital to claim the body. The agitated relatives had subsequently handed Ranjit to the police, who arrested him.

Shortly, Ranjit’s father Govind Pathak, who also turned up at the hospital, was also arrested.

Adityapur police station Officer in-charge Arvind Kumar confirmed that a young woman has committed suicide in Adityapur, but said that the arrests were made by Sakchi police.

“The arrests have been made by Sakchi police team. We will get the case investigated once the case is transferred to Adityapur police station from Sakchi police under which jurisdiction, the MGM Medical College and Hospital falls,” said Kumar.

Sakchi police station SI Alvina Kerketta confirmed to have arrested two persons for coercing Juli to commit suicide for after she felt compelled for not being to meet the dowry demand.

“We are investigating the incident. As per our information there are marks of assault on the deceased’s body. In the autopsy report things will get cleared,” Kerketta said.
