Water crisis hits Potka village as hand-pumps become defunct

Jamshedpur: Much ahead of the peak summers, the residents of Chandanpur village of Gwalkanta panchayat in Potka are reeling under acute water crisis. A majority of them are compelled to consume dirty water drawn from ponds and pits. This is because most of the hand-pumps in the area have become defunct.

Sources said the residents of the village, which is largely inhabited by Adivasis, carry water from far-off places on a daily basis. This is because not a single hand-pump is working in the village. There are around 80 families in Chandanpur.

Asked about the water crisis, the BDO of Potka, Prabhash Chandra Das, said all Mukhiyas and Panchayat Secretaries had been directed to get the hand-pumps repaired as soon as possible. He said a fund of Rs 922 has been approved for the repair of each hand-pump by the Mukhiyas so that the water crisis could be resolved.
