Two stoned to death in Sonari, tension prevails after group clashes


    Jamshedpur, Feb. 13: Tension prevailed in the Sonari thana area in the steel city on Saturday, as residents of two bustees Rupnagar bustee and Bilasnagar bustee, clashed following the murder of an auto-rickshaw driver on Friday.

    However, the police swung into action and soon brought the situation under control. In their endeavor to scatter the clashing mobs, the police had to resort to lathi charge. Currently, large number of cops has been deployed in both the bustees to ensure that there is no further flare-up.

    Several residents and two policemen sustained varying degrees of injuries during Saturday’s clash, which witnessed rampant stone-throwing.

    Two persons have also been taken into custody in connection with the two murders. Currently, the police are interrogating them.

    According to reports, the genesis of the problem was the murder of a contract laborer from Bilasnagar named Biru Mahali, who was killed by unidentified miscreants in the region on late Thursday night. Matters aggravated when an auto-rickshaw driver named Kalicharan from Rupnagar bustee was killed on the following day – Friday.

    Locals said that both the victim met gory ends as they were brutally crushed to death with stones. According to them, residents of Biru’s locality killed Kalicharan in order to avenge his death. This led to a group clash between the residents of two bustees on Saturday morning, virtually making the place a battle zone.

    The rivalry between the residents of Bilasnagar and Rupnagar bustees in Sonari dates back to 2011. The area has witnessed several clashes between the residents of these two slums, claiming at least five lives, over the years.
    Keeping the simmering tension in the area in view, the East Singhbhum district administration has deployed RAF jawans in the two bustees.

    Police said that though the situation was under control, chances of further clashes cannot be ruled out. Hence, precautionary measures have been initiated.

    At the same time, the police have launched a probe to ascertain the reason behind the bitter rivalry between the residents of these two bustees.

    The police are trying to find out the places where the residents of the two bustees held meetings before the clash and the individuals who attended these meetings and were responsible for Saturday’s violence.
