Patna, Dec 3 (IANS) Taking note of alleged police brutality against two students in custody, the Bihar government late Tuesday transferred the police superintendent and deputy superintendent of Bhojpur district, officials said.
Hundreds of angry students protested in Bhojpur for the third consecutive day Tuesday against the alleged torture of two student leaders in police custody. They also ransacked the office of the Veer Kunwar Singh University in the district.
An official in the Chief Minister’s Office said Bhojpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar and Deputy Superintendent of Police Dipak Ranjan were transferred after Inspector General of Police (Patna) A.K. Ambedkar, who investigated the matter, submitted a report to the government Tuesday evening.
Angry over the alleged torture in police custody, activists of the Chhatra Samagam, the students’ wing of the state’s ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U), took to the streets, burnt tyres and ransacked the university’s offices in Bhojpur, Patna and Gaya since Sunday, police said.
The Chhatra Samagam alleged that its leaders Prince Singh Bajrangi and Kumud Patel were detained and assaulted by police after being stripped.
The two student leaders were released Sunday after the intervention of Bihar Education Minister Brishen Patel. Both had multiple cuts and bruises.
The two were admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital.
JD-U state president Vashisht Narayan Singh condemned the incident, saying “police have exposed their brutal face”.
