‘Hypertension, BP value more than 140/90 mm Hg, is very common, affecting 30% of the adult population worldwide. But only 50% of them are diagnosed to have hypertension. Of those diagnosed only 50% take treatment’, said Dr. Vijaya Bharat, HOD, Cardiology department of TMH.

She said that most of the patients believe that hypertension gets cured. Medicines that control BP should not be stopped without regular follow up, since elevated BP may not cause any symptom. The first symptom of untreated hypertension may be a life threatening heart attack or a disabling brain stroke.

‘One in five adults suffer from hypertension and people who believe that they don’t have high BP because they have not checked it, said Dr. Bharat, adding, ‘chewing tobacco, smoking is a major factor of hypertension while pickles and high salt intake and ageing are the other reasons behind it’.
