Tata Steel organises diabetes awareness, screening program

Jamshedpur, Dec 1: On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, Public Health team of Tata Steel Foundation (TSF) organised awareness and screening programmes in rural areas and urban bustees from November 14 to 30 covering total 49 villages and bustees.

Pamphlets were distributed and random blood sugar tests were done for community people. Altogether 49 programmes were organised which covered 49 villages and bustees. Total of 2706 participants benefitted from the awareness programme. Screening programme saw 2239 blood sugar test done. 199 new diabetic cases were identified during the camp.

All new cases were advised regarding diet control, exercise and were also given advice to get proper treatment.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the World Health Organisation in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. WHO reports that at least 220 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and its incidence is increasing rapidly, and it is projected that the number of diabetes deaths will double by the year 2030.
