Sabar boys death jolts health department out of slumber


    Chandil: Waking up from its slumber following the death of a Sabar boy, Seraikela-Kharsawan district health department here on Saturday sent a team of doctors and paramedical staff to several villages of Chilgu panchayat to give relief to the people suffering from what is being seen as a malaria breakout.

    The department sprang to action after a one and a half year old boy identified as Pankaj Sabar died in Kadma Jhor village of Chilgu panchayat under the Chandil block.

    The minor reportedly died of malaria. His elder brother, Sukhdev Sabar, 5, also diagnosed with malaria, was admitted into the ICU ward of the MGM Hospital. Sources said that around 25 people are down with malaria in Chilgu villages. A one and a half year old girl had died of malaria on the day of Deepawali. The actual number of malaria patients in the panchayat could be more, they said.

    Sources said the malaria breakout has gripped people in Kadamjhor, Makulakocha, Chakulia, Kathjor and many adjoining villages in the panchayat over the last few weeks. The team of the health department visited the malaria-prone zones and took blood samples of suspected malaria patients after conducting a preliminary health examinations on them.

    The medical officer in-charge of the Primary Health Centre at Chandil, Dr Manju Dubey, said medicines had been distributed among the villagers diagnosed with malaria. She said that out of the total 93 people whose blood samples were collected for pathological test, as many as 49 were found to be malaria positive.

    The villagers of Chilgu alleged that local administration officials had taken delayed action to control the breakout of the vector-borne disease. They said the administration should take every possible measures to rein in the epidemic.

    Chilgu villagers said many of the victims were forced to go to the Dalma forests to collect firewood as they were under compulsion of poverty to do so.
