Riot of colours on city streets as Jamshedpur Carnival’ kicks-off

Jamshedpur: A riot of colours spread across the streets of the city as the fourth edition of Jamshedpur Carnival got flagged off on Monday. From rock music to Bhangra and from Chhau dance to garba, the people of the city got plunged into celebration.

The fourth edition of Jamshedpur Carnival kicked off on Monday with various social organisations, and corporates participating in the carnival parade that kicked off from the Jubilee Park.

The carnival parade was headed by the legendary figure of King Momo. King Momo is the titular head of a carnival parade.

This visit by King Momo makes Jamshedpur a very special town indeed, since it is possibly the only place outside of Goa, where this Latin American tradition comes alive! The tradition of King Momo comes to us from cities like Rio de Janiero which are famous for hosting the biggest and most spectacular carnival celebrations in the world. Every major carnival has a King Momo, who is often given the symbolic key to the city.

Typically, a tall and rotund man with a smiling joyful face and a prominent belly, King Momo is like a tropical Santa Claus who serves as the harbinger of carnival festivities, much in the way Santa brings in Christmas.

East Singhbhum senior superintendent of police Anoop T. Mathews flagged off the carnival parade. Tata Steel vice-president (corporate services), Sunil Bhaskaran, Ashish Mathur, managing director, Jusco, members of the Jamshedpur Hoteliers Association and other communities participated in carnival procession today. A live Latin band – Poco Loco from New Delhi performed on the occasion.

The myriad facets of the Latin music, the stylish guitarists, the casual drum beats and the soulful voice have also been added to make the attendees move their feet.

To make the event attractive a chopper also showered flower petals. In the evening art lovers in Jamshedpur enjoyed the fourth edition of Dance Festival. A dance competition among local dance groups was also organised. The theme of the competition was dream sequence.

The people of Jamshedpur would witness diversity of rock music at the Rock Show by Bands from Jamshedpur and nearby places on December 20.

Prabhakar Singh, official, Jamshedpur Hoteliers’ Association, said that through the carnival the hotels also plan to spread the taste of Jamshedpur.

Even people visiting the city can enjoy it. A food festival will also be a part of the carnival and delicacies of different states would be served for the people.
