Rain brings relief, mercury falls in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, May 6: Heavy rains laced with thunderstorms hit the Steel City on Thursday evening giving the denizens much needed respite from the soaring mercury. The heavy shower stayed for about an hour and touched a large part of the district. The local Met office said that the maximum temperature dipped today.

However, for the average citizens of the Industrial town the shower has brought relief from the scorching sun. The entire Kolhan division has been reeling under heat wave for the last two weeks and today’s shower has indeed given them the reprieve.

“The rain is being a relief from the scorching summer heat and people do not mind at all being inconvenienced as they were prepared for such an eventuality,” said official Meteorological office

The forecast for the next 48 hours said rain/thundershowers would occur at most places over Chottanagpur plateau region and at many places over interior Singhbhum. Moderate to rather heavy rain wouldoccur at most places over all the districts of Kolhan.

Jamshedpur recorded the maximum temperature soared to 40 degrees Celsius, six notches above average. People were forced to stay indoors to escape the blistering afternoon heat .

Officials of Patna Met office said that there had been no Nor’wester. But the cyclonic trough line stretching between Madhya Pradesh and Gangetic Bengal helped bring rain.

He said that more thunderstorms are likely to occur in 48 hours. “Easterly winds are dominating most parts of the state. The atmosphere is conducive for rain and storm weather.

“When the wind direction changes to easterly, it causes a trough, which causes cloudy skies. It is not unusual for light rain to occur due to the trough,” he noted.

Another met official of the city said that maximum temperatures would fall by 2-3 deg Celsius during the next three days. However the cloudy weather would not affect the heat in the city. “The moisture content in the air is very high. Maximum and minimum temperatures will be above 36 degree Celsius.

People, in large numbers, ventured outdoors enjoying the breezy weather while some youngsters preferred to get drenched in the drizzle. Showers were seen in areas of Jamshedpur, Chaibasa, Chakulia and lasted more than an hour.

According to the meteorological department, chances are that these localised thunderstorms will greet the city tomorrow once again. But it would not result in heavy rain nor will it have much effect on the temperature.
