Jamshedpur, Feb. 12: East Singhbhum district traffic police have tightened up vigil on errant bikers by slapping on-the-spot fines between Rs 270 and Rs 500, depending on the nature of violations at different strategic locations across the city. The drive was carried out keeping in view the Valentine’s Day.
The drive was carried out simultaneously at six strategic locations — Jubilee Park, Mango chowk, near Jugsalai police station, near Tata Pigments gate on Bistupur-Station Road and at Golmuri roundabout.
Individuals not wearing helmets and triple riders were fined Rs 270 each, while others without driving licence got Rs 500 rap. The helmet checking drive was made so much vigorous and intensified that the two-wheelers riders were taken aback as many of them had to cope with more than one checking post while moving from one point of the city to another.
A police official said that spot fine was charged from around 200 individuals for violation of traffic norms.
Sources in traffic department said that the drive was carried out following a directive of senior superintendent of police Anoop T Mathew to keep those with a penchant for rash driving on a tight leash. A source said that about Rs 50,000 was collected through spot fine on Friday alone.
�The rising cases of road mishaps are a matter of great concern and steps are being taken to curb the menace. We will also see to it that rash-driving is checked with immediate effect, and for this we will look into exactly how many cases related to the road accidents have been registered and if the drivers who are accused of causing the mishap are being convicted,” said an official.
According to the official, the drive would continue in coming days. He added that the move would bring about a visible change in youngsters, who would learn to develop safe riding habits to avoid paying cash penalty.
