Jamshedpur, May 20 : A batch of 52 students of Std IX and X from 10+2 Government High School, Bara Jamda, West Singhbhum accompanied by two teachers Amod Kumar Mishra and Ms. SonamKumari visited CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur and interacted with the scientists and research fellows today under the aegis of School-NML interactive programme (SNIP).
Every students were thrilled after visiting and interacting with concerned Scientists of the selected laboratories of CSIR-NML. Most of the students felt that the interaction was very informative and might bring a lot of new ideas.
This programme was designed to provide the students an exposure to modern Scientific laboratories and also to teach various facets of science in our day-to-day activities.
The programme was scheduled for five hours, which comprised of an overview of Indian Science and Technology, Documentary film show on CSIR and NML separately, visit to NML Museum / Archive and selective units of the laboratory namely – Mechanical testing, Solvent extraction, creep testing, E-waste & Recycling.
Dr. S.K. Mandal, Chief Scientist & Coordinator of the programme, gave an overview of Indian S&T scenario and particularly the role played by CSIR-NML in the services of the Nation. He elaborated on why one should take up a career in science and how he could contribute towards the developments of Indian society. Dr P.N. Mishra, Principal Scientist, S.N. Hembram, Dr. Anjani Kumar Sahuand ManasSamanta led the students to various activities carried out at CSIR-NML.
The students expressed their feelings, asked several questions, and clarified their doubts through the interaction with the scientists.
The students also visited the Asia’s second largest creep testing lab, where Prabir Roy told the students about the importance of this laboratory in the areas of the creep testing, tensile testing, fatigue testing and so on.
In the electronic waste laboratory, Archana Kumari and Rekha Panda explained about the solvent extraction and ion exchange process, which is involved in the recovery of Indium, a rare earth metal available in LCD & other electronic gadgets. Most of the students said that the interaction was very informative and brought in lot of idea.
The students were from the Iron ore mines area. The dreams of all students became true with the learning of various methods of iron ore fines processing at CSIR-NML.
Today, they realized the value of iron products. The students expressed their excitement and happiness over the laboratory visit as well as interaction with the scientists and research scholars. In fact, they were thrilled while visiting the laboratories and practical set up as well.
