Family members demand probe into reason of death, allege of assault in prison
Jamshedpur: Harpal Singh Thapar, the director of Telco-based Mother Teresa Welfare Trust, has died in Ghaghidih Central Jail early Saturday morning. His family members have accused the jail administration of not informing them about his death and the reasons of his death. They demanded an inquiry into the reasons for his untimely death.
According to sources in the jail, the condition of Harpal Thapar deteriorating and he was rushed to the MGM Hospital at around 11.30 pm where the doctors declared him brought dead.
The relatives and family members claimed that Harpal Singh Thapar was innocent in the matter and he was implicated in a false case.
They said that he took care of the children like his own daughters, but the same girls levelled despicable charges on him and this had shocked him no end.
The family members charged that the family members were not informed about the ailments he was suffering from as per the jail manual and also about his death in time as they came to know about from news portals.
They claimed that their lawyer informed them about his demise at about 8 in the morning of Saturday. Though Harpal had died on Friday night itself.
Sitaramdera based sister of the deceased identified as Manjit Kaur also described her brother as being innocent in the matter and claimed that he was beaten inside the jail and that they would be meeting SSP East Singhbhum M Tamilvanan and demand an impartial probe into the reason for death inside custody and the post mortem should be done in presence of a magistrate.
It may be recalled that two minor girl inmates of Mother Teresa Welfare Trust had levelled serious allegation of sexual impropriety against Harpal Singh Thapar and Pushpa Rani Tirkey along with two others on June 6 and a case was lodged in Telco thana.
Acting on the allegations, Jamshedpur police had arrested four accused from Madhya Pradesh and had sent them to judicial custody.
However, the reason for the death of Harpal Singh Thapar in Ghaghidih Central Jail is not clear yet as the administration has not made any comments on this. The family members have demanded an enquiry into it.
Significantly, the four identified as Harpal Singh Thapar (46), wife Pushpa Rani Turkey (45), Geeta Kaur (45) and son Aditya Singh (20) had been brought here from Singroli to the steel city All the four accused were residents of Samsher Tower at Kharangajhar in Telco. Other accused Tony David had already been arrested.
The police had registered under Section of molestation and also POCSO Act against the four on the basis of an FIR.
According to police, two victims had fled the Kharangajhar shelter home on the night of June 5, leading the conductors of the home to report the matter to the Telco police. But when the duo was traced the next day they refused to return to the home and had spilled the beans against Thapar and others.
According to the victims, Thapar and Aditya would molest them, Pushpa and Geeta would make them do domestic work and would often assault them.
