Minister Saryu Roy administers oath of unity to people

    Jamshedpur: More than 5000 people comprising school students, teachers, social activists, police officials, civil defence volunteers, traders and others showed great enthusiasm as they participated in the Run for Unity organized here on Monday at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

    The Run for Unity was held to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel celebrated as National Unity Day.

    The chief guest of the programme was the state food supplies minister Saryu Roy. Accompanied by the MP of Jamshedpur Vidyut Varan Mahato, Roy led the gathering to take mass oath for the unity and integrity of the country. He appealed to the people to be responsible towards their duties as citizens of India.

    Roy jointly flagged off the Run for Unity with the MP, Padma Shree awardee and ace archer Deepika Kumari and Dronacharya awardee coach Purnima Mahato.

    In his address, Roy said the citizens of India had showed unity and solidarity with the Indian soldiers whenever the country was challenged by outsiders. He said the people had shown great patriotism recently by boycotting Chinese products during Deepawali.

    Roy spoke on the life and contributions of Sardar Patel to the Indian struggle for Independence.

    Also addressing the event, Vidyut Varan Mahato said that Sardar Patel had played a pivotal role in uniting the country politically.

    He said the people, especially youths, needed to learn from the life of the great son of India.

    Members of Indian Red Cross Society, Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce, Basti Vikas Samiti and many other city-based organizations participated in large numbers in todays event.

    A welcome speech was given by the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum Amit Kumar. He said the people need to make National Unity Day meaningful by taking oath for unity and integrity of the nation.

    Prior to the run, the participants paid floral tributes to Sardar Patel by garlanding his portrait on the occasion.
    Many district administration officials and corporate representatives were present during the Run for Unity.
