Man commits suicide by jumping in front of moving Geetanjali Express

Jamshedpur, March 6: An unidentified middle-aged man (around 50) committed suicide by jumping in front of the moving Howrah-bound Geetanjali Express. The train was entering Tatanagar railway station on Monday morning when the tragedy struck.

The incident took place at around 8.40 am when the superfast train was entering platform No. 4. According to sources, the middle-aged man wearing a full-sleeve shirt and a trouser standing on the platform suddenly jumped on the track before the running train. He was ran over by the train and cut into two pieces from head.

As the train stopped, passengers on the platform gathered at the spot. Soon the Government Railway Police (GRP) and station officials rushed to the spot. The GRP deployed workers to remove the body from the track. They also took the body into their custody.

Officiating station manager N K Sengupta went over to the spot. He said: � They are investigating the incident however, the driver of the train D.R. Behera in a written statement said this to be case of suicide. In the note the driver said that as soon as the train was arriving at the platform on the Chakradharpur end the middle-aged man jumped into the track and he came under the train”.

Instead of five minutes halt at Tatanagar, the train was held-up till 9.15 am because of the mishap. Sengupta confirmed that the train left Tatanagar station on its onward journey after 9.15 am.

Officer-in-charge of GRP ( Tatanagar) Pradeep Chaudhary confirmed it to be a case of suicide. ” We have scanned the CCTV footages that the middle-aged man jumped on to the track when the train was arriving at the platform.

He was neither carrying a purse nor any documents which would have helped us in establishing his identity. We have recovered the body and sent it to the MGM Medical College in Dimna for a post-mortem,” said Chaudhary.
