Jamshedpur, July 27: Colleges affiliated to the Kolhan University are gearing up to introduce radio-frequency identification (RFID) card to monitor the students from next academic session.
Taking the first step in the direction, Karim City College is set to issue radio-frequency identification (RFID) cards from the academic session 2016-17. RFID is the use of radio waves to read and capture information stored on a tag attached to an object. It consists of a tag or label and a reader.
According to information, all the fresh candidates from UG and PG will get a multipurpose RFID card which is designed to be used as id cards, library cards and fee card. Since RFID cards stores electronic information, the data fed in it will help college to monitor students� record.
The initiative will start from next month. It is a part of the college’s new management information system (MIS) as a part of RUSA (Rashtriya UchchatarShiksha Abhiyan). It is through the MIS that RUSA will be monitored and implemented.
The affiliated college of the Kolhan University situated in Sakchi has already begun the first phase this month with the admission process that includes departments like accounts, administration and also the fee counter.
�RUSA is an excellent opportunity to the state universities to upgrade educational and research ambience of infrastructure, knowledge resources and skill development expertise to produce international quality manpower.
It should also be underscored that the upgraded colleges and universities would be mentored for high-quality research outputs with fund-associated expertise through RUSA,” said a senior official.
Moreover, the college aims to make its campus cashless within a couple of years. Next month, new students can also avail books from the library using their RFID cards.
As per the college authorities, new students will receive their cards on the day of their induction scheduled on August 1. There will be about 1600 new students who will receive the benefits.
�Swiping of the cards in the machines provided will alert the colleges, and the parents about the punctuality of the students,� noted an official. He said it would help slow down the rate of latecomers as well.
According to him, the students who will start their UG and PG courses from 2016 will be given a unique enrollment number that will make record keeping and administrative work easy. For example if a student enrolls for English Honors, his unique number would be BAEN16001.
While BA denotes the course, EN the subject, 16 the enrollment year and the last three digits will be the roll number. Similarly for B.Sc in physics, it will be BSPH16001.
Several other colleges are also mulling on the idea to introduce RIFD from next academic session.
