Khadi and cottage industries vital for Gram Swaraj: Governor


    Ranchi, Oct. 2: Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu said that khadi and cottage industries could prove crucial for making villages self-dependent.

    She said that khadi has been a part of the national freedom and Mahatma Gandhi was very keen about weaving and wearing Khadi. She made the observation during on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti during a programme at Morhabadi here on Sunday.

    The governor said that a sizeable section of society which is away from development needs to be connected with development. She said that the lesson of truth and non-violence has to be adhered in words and spirit.

    Summoning people of the state to wear khadi on Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti apart from other occasions, she said that the new generation is adopting khadi which is a good sign.

    She laid stress on strengthening the financial status of Khadi Gramodyog so that villagers could be connected with it. Village and cottage industries should be boosted up for making people self dependent, she said.

    Urban Development Minister C P Singh said that Mahatma Gandhi connected people of the nation with a national movement with the help of the spinning wheel. He summoned children to maintain cleanliness.

    Prior to this, the governor, along with the ministers, paid floral tribute on the statue of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. A one act play on the life of Mahatma Gandhi was staged by the school children. Murmu felicitated stone sculptors of Dumka with certificates and tool kits.

    On this occasion Mayor Asha Lakra, Deputy Mayor Sanjay Vijayvargese, MP Ram Tahal Choudhary, MLA Navin Jaiswal, Khadi Board Chairman Sanjay Seth and MD Dipankar Panda along with other people were also present.
