Jharkhand home department showcauses Jamshedpur jail supdt over Thapar custodial death report

Jamshedpur, July 22: The state home and prison department has rejected the Ghaghidih jail superintendent Nagender Singh report citing post Covid physical complications as the cause of death of Mother Teresa Welfare Trust director Harpal Singh Thapar inside the jail. 

The report also stated other chronic diseases as the reason of death. 
The department considers the report as false and believes that Thapar faced torture inside jail for money and other reasons which led to injury marks on his body. there were injury marks on back and leg and several portion of the body had turned blue. 
The department has showcaused the jail superintendent for trying to hide the issue and not informing the senior officials. 
Jharkhand jail IG, Manoj Kumar today said that the jail superintenenent has been showcaused  in connection with the death of Harpal Thapar and on the initiative of the prison department a judicial probe has also begun in the case. 
The Jamshedpur district court has deputed two magistrates for probing the case. 
Significantly, the jail superintdent had in its report to the department mentioned that Harpal Singh Thapar was a Covid patient and was facing post Covid complication and the blue mark on body were found before he was admitted in prison and even the injury marks on the body were present before his admission in the prison.

It may be recalled that two minor girl inmates of Mother Teresa Welfare Trust had levelled serious allegation of sexual impropriety against Harpal Singh Thapar and Pushpa Rani Tirkey along with two others on June 6 and a case was lodged in Telco thana.

Acting on the allegations, Jamshedpur police had arrested four accused from Madhya Pradesh and had sent them to judicial custody.

Significantly, the four identified as Harpal Singh Thapar (46), wife Pushpa Rani Turkey (45), Geeta Kaur (45) and son Aditya Singh (20)  had been brought here from Singroli to the steel city All the four accused were residents of Samsher Tower at Kharangajhar in Telco. Other accused Tony David had already been arrested.

The police had registered under Section of molestation and also POCSO Act against the four on the basis of an FIR.
