Jamshedpur, Jan 27: Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy hoisted the National Flag at the office of Bharatiya Jantantra Morcha (BJM) in Baridih on the occasion of Republic Day on Thursday.
Addressing party workers, Roy said the people of the country need to ponder over the further course of action to put the nation on the path of development. He said all citizens need to make sincere effort to build the nation as dreamt by the freedom fighters.
“Many provisions were made for the poor and marginalized sections. Special exemptions were given to backward and Dalit people. Today the country is on the way to become an economic superpower. But this is only possible when there is peace in the country. It is the duty of one and all to maintain unity and follow the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’,” said the legislator.
Roy further said that he had launched ‘Damodar Bachao Abhiyan’ in the year 2004 and had organized various programmes for the conservation of rivers. “Damodar and Swarnarekha rivers have been fully freed from industrial pollution. But rivers are still being polluted by municipal waste. The waste coming out of our households is directly flowing into the rivers. The Central government has given its nod for setting up three sewerage treatment plants on the banks of Damodar. Government has also given nod for setting up sewerage treatment plant over the drain in Moharda. But the waste coming out of households in the urban Jamshedpur is being dumped straight into the rivers. We need to put in sincere efforts at individual level to conserve our rivers. I take the pledge on Republic Day to conserve the rivers and protect them from municipal waste this year.”
The Damodar river has significance both culturally and religiously. Several Hindu writings, notably the Skanda Purana and the Matsya Purana, make reference to the Damodar River. Hindu mythology attributes the river’s name to Lord Damodar, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. It is thought that bathing in the river will wash your sins away and offer you luck.
