Ranchi, March 11: Intervening during the ongoing Budget Session of the state assembly, Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy raised objection to the Department of Women, Child Development and Social Welfare,change in the policy regarding providing supplementary nutrition and said that the ration for taking pregnant and lactating women home from Anganwadi. The decision to give them packaged nutrition instead is not appropriate.
Roy said that the government should compensate those who could not get supplementary nutrition due to the closure of schools and Anganwadis during the time of Covid as per the provision of Food Security Act.
He said that in lieu of rice-daal, the government is going to give fortified nutrition containing micronutrients. However, FSSI has not set any criteria regarding fortification of nutritional supplements, on the basis of which it can be checked that the amount of micronutrient should be in government-provided nutrition. Not only this, the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad has also not set any criteria regarding this.
Roy told the government that even four years ago, the then government had distributed packaged nutrition through Anganwadis, which people did not like. Either the housewives used to throw away the packaged food. Even when they were given to animals, they could not eat it.. Roy told the House that when he was a minister, iron fortified salt was given by the government, so citizens did not like such salt and had to throw salt.
Giving the data of children and women suffering from malnutrition and anemia in Jharkhand, Roy tried to prove that the situation of malnutrition and anemia is worrying in Jharkhand. He also gave the data of reduction in weight of children according to age and height and asked to pay special attention to this.
He also emphasized on giving pension to the handicapped, Anganwadi sevika, improving the condition of assistance, repairing the Anganwadi buildings and said that Widow and old age pension scheme should reach the beneficiaries on time.
