Jamshedpur, April 26: Loyola School, Jamshedpur, ranked among country’s top 100 schools, has lined up cultural and sports extravaganza besides philanthropic work to celebrate its platinum jubilee this year. From a quiz contest, to cycling to musical shows to the performance of Bollywood singer Loyola alumnus Shilpa Rao, the school along with Loyola Alumni Association (LAA) has decided to make this milestone a gala affair.

To make the celebration much meaningful, the school is also coming up with an all faith prayer facility, which will be inaugurated in December this year. The new facility aims to provide students of all faiths a quiet space to pray as per their religion. The initiative is a part of the wider efforts of the school to promote diversity and equality.

Father Pius Fernandes, principal, Loyola School, who was also at the helm of the school during Golden Jubilee celebration in 1997, said that he is excited to see the students back to the campus. Though the celebration could not take place last year due to the pandemic, they have chalked out plans to make the platinum jubilee celebration memorable this year in every sense.

Known for his determination and human values Father Pius said that the need of the hour is to discover hidden talent of the students. He said that the school has adapted to newer technologies but its value system remains intact.

Platinum Jubilee celebrations began in the school campus on January 15, 2021.

Sharing his experiences as the principal of the leading school, Father Pius said that he has served as principal of Loyola from 1992-2002 and today feels humbled. He said Loyola is a brand today just for the sake of its teachers and alumni.

Loyola School which started in 1947 with only 34 boys was founded in January 1947, by two Jesuits from Kolkata, Fr. Cecil Leeming and Fr. Robert Drugman. Loyola was given 3.5 acres of land which once housed the ChotaNagpur Regiment Club (CNR). Hindi classes were held in a small school bus while the CNR Club hall housed several classes at the same time.

The Tatas had requested the Jesuit Fathers from Maryland, U.S.A., to come to Jamshedpur to manage Loyola. Five American fathers came from the United States under the Rector Superior Father Caroll I. Fasy. The fathers are given the Chotanagpur Regiment Club (CNR Club) and the land around it to ‘build’ the school on. The boundary walls of the school are the same from the time when the CNR club existed.
