Jamshedpur: Demand for Kolhan as separate country, villagers attack police with arrows and stones

Chaibasa, Jan 23: More than six policemen were injured in an attack by villagers who shot arrows and pelted stones at the Mufassil police station on Sunday in demand for release of four persons arrested by police earlier in the day and also for Kolhan as an independent country.

Chaibasa police received information on Sunday that the Munda community was providing appointment letters and running a separate government in Kolhan. A police team reached the spot and arrested four persons and took them to the police station on Sunday morning.

 In protest against the police action, villagers pelted stones at Mufassil police station and shot arrows at policemen, demanding the release of those arrested and for a separate Kolhan country.

More than six police jawans were injured in the clash. Later police resorted to baton charge and used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

Yet the crowd did not disperse. The police then fired shots in the air and it took four hours to bring the situation under control. At around 6 pm the situation was brought under police control.  Police force in large number has been deployed in and around the Mufassil police station area.

Among the injured policemen was Constable Brij Mohan Mishra who sustained a serious injury with an arrow hitting his stomach. He was admitted to Tata Main Hospital in a critical condition. ASI Arjun Singh, Ram Vilas Mahato, Constable Agnu Oraon and Satwant Singh Munda had also sustained injuries caused by arrow hits. They were being treated at Chaibasa Sadar Hospital. The condition of Constable Brij Mohan Mishra, admitted at TMH, remained critical.

According to reports, it was raining heavily in Chaibasa at around 2 pm when villagers from Ladurabasa and other nearby villages reached Mufassil police station armed with traditional weapons.

At first they pelted stones at the police station and also shot arrows that caused injuries to police jawans. Soon, the protest escalated and senior police officers sent additional forces to the spot. A large number of villagers protested and shot arrows and pelted stones at the police station between 2 pm and 6 pm.

After the incident, Chaibasa SP Ajay Linda issued a statement mentioning that on Sunday, a training cum educational certificate checking program was organized in village Ladurabasa school under Kursi Panchayat for fake restoration in the name of Kolhan Government State in Chaibasa from 7 am.  The advertisement related to fake reinstatement, was put out by Champai Chandrashekhar Dangil in the name of Kolhan Government.

On reaching Ladurabasa for verification of information and taking necessary action, the police team thwarted the ongoing illegal process. The police team along with Sub-Divisional Officer Sadar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Sadar, Police Inspector Sadar Zone, Station House Officer-in-Charge Mufassil, Magistrate and other police officers, armed forces and baton team raided the spot. A large number of registers, files, printers, monitors, laptops and mobiles related to fake appointments were confiscated. Some persons were taken into custody and brought to Mufassil police station. After this, more than 200 villagers armed with traditional weapons surrounded the Mufassil police station and engaged in stone pelting. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, the police used mild force and as the matter escalated, they launched a baton charge, fired tear gas shells and later fired in the air to frighten and disperse the unruly and dangerous crowd. Policemen and villagers sustained injuries in the incident. First aid to the injured was being provided at the Sadar Hospital in Chaibasa. Although the situation was normal till the time of going to press, police continued to keep a hawk eye in and around the police station area.
