Jamshedpur, Sept. 15: The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Local Centre, a professional body of Engineers since 1952, celebrated the 48th Engineers� day at its premises in Sakchi on Friday.
This year it happens to be the 156th birth day of the most eminent engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Viswesvaraiya in whose honour this event is celebrated.
The function started with the garlanding of the statue of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya by the chief guest R P Tyagi, FIE, Ex- G.M Tata Steel, and Ex- Managing Director Tayo Rolls Ltd., Avneesh Gupta FIE, V.P. Shared Services, Tata Steel, Jamshedpur and Chairman of the Centre.
In his speech, Avneesh Gupta talked about the importance of Engineers Day and introduced the theme of the day. Prabal Patra, Head Instrumentation and Control Automation, Tata Steel, was honoured with Engineering Achieve Award. Prizes were also distributed for engineering quiz held on the day.
After the award ceremony, Tyagi delivered the talk on the theme �Role of Engineers in a Developing India�
September 15 is celebrated every year in the country since 1967 as �Engineers� Day� to commemorate the birthday of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
Visvesvaraya was also called the precursor of economic planning in India. His learned discourse on economic planning in India, Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India, was the first available document on the planning effort of the country and it is still held as the parent source matter for economic planners, said R P Tyagi.
He further said, ‘India is still a developing country and its development largely depends upon the robust industrial infrastructure. In the Indian industry scenario, Engineering is by far the largest segment.
The nature of engineering industries in India is grossly diversified starting of heavy engineering, light and medium engineering and rural or cottage engineering’.
Tyagi went on to say that India�s engineering industry accounts for 27 per cent of the total factories in the industrial sector and represents 63 per cent of the overall foreign collaborations. It has emerged as the largest contributor to the country�s total merchandise exports. Indian manufacturing/ engineering industry employs over 4 million skilled and semiskilled workers (direct and indirect).
The Indian engineering industry has emerged as a dynamic sector in the country�s industrial economy and has made the country self-reliant in key areas, he added.
The function was attended by distinguished engineers and guest of the city. The function concluded with vote of thanks by Anil Kumar Choudhury, Hony. Secretary of the Jamshedpur Local Centre.
