IIT Kharagpurs’ Mukesh, Vijay win Mind Over Matter’ season 3


    Jamshedpur, July 15 : Tata Steel announced the winners of its much awaited Annual Innovation challenge – Mind over Matter Season 3, today in Jamshedpur.

    The 6 month-long programme culminated with the Grand finale held on Friday, where a total of 5 teams presented their innovation ideas before the jury at the Steelenium Hall in Jamshedpur Steel Works.

    The jury for the finale was chaired by Anand Sen, President TQM and Steel Business, Tata Steel, Sanjay Chandra, Chief R&D and SS, Tata Steel and Dharmendra Kumar, Chief Engineering and Projects, Tata Steel.

    Speaking on this occasion, Chief Guest, Anand Sen, President, TQM and Steel Business, Tata Steel said, “Mind over Matter is a promising platform for fresh and young minds and provides them the opportunity to work with the professional experts at Tata Steel’s R&D.

    The program has helped the students put their insights into application using state-of-the-art equipment and facilities’

    Season 3 of Mind over Matter received an overwhelming participation from more than 30 top engineering institutes of India including the IITs, NITs and the likes. The competition witnessed a record 270 idea submissions against a total of 12 challenges (topics) put forth by our R&D team.

    A total of 10 teams (7 teams with 2 students each and 3 teams with only one member) were selected and invited to work with Tata Steel’s R&D team under the guidance of assigned mentors as part of their 2-month internship. A total of 5 teams were selected in the pre-finals held on July 14 and went on to fight it out for ultimate glory in the grand finale.

    Mukesh Kumar and Vijay Anand from IIT kharagpur emerged as the winner of MOM season 3; Ms Priyanka Sinha and Ms Aarushee Agarwal from NIT Jamshedpur bagged the 1st Runners up position and Mr Manish K Chandan and Mr Sourav Agarwal from BIT Mesra, Ranchi secured the third slot.

    Prize money worth Rs. 1,00,000/-, Rs. 75,000/- and Rs. 50,000 for the winners, 1st Runner up and 2nd runner up were given up respectively. The winner team was also awarded with a trophy. Certificates of Recognition were given to top three teams whereas certificates of completion were given for all other teams. The top three winning teams of this season walked away with pre-placement offers from Tata Steel and rest 7 teams received PPIs.

    Tata Steel has a rich legacy of innovation through Research & Development and is continuously pushing its boundaries on innovations that drive fruitful results. In line with its commitment and drive for Innovation, the steel major initiated the Annual Innovation Challenge ‘Mind over Matter’ in 2014 to provide a platform and enable young budding talents give shape to their ideas, innovate, work on real manufacturing and product challenges and explore implementation of the idea on an industrial scale. Over the years, the initiative has grown 10 fold and promises to be the most credible and popular innovation platform for young minds.
