Ranchi: Chief Minister Hemant Soren today said the roads were the benchmark of development of the state. He said there should be roads to ensure smooth and easy accessibility to the state Capital and villages of the state. He said the roads should be of top quality so that the development process does not get hampered.

Soren held a review meeting of the road construction department in his chamber at Project Bhavan. He said the condition of the highway from Ranchi to Baharagora via Jamshedpur was deplorable and that it needed repair. He said the National Highway Authority of India was paying no attention to the poor condition of the highway. Hence sufficient measures should be taken to make sure that the highway becomes world class and that the vehicle owners do not face difficulty in using the highway.

Soren said a letter will soon be sent to the Government of India in this regard. The highway will soon be prepared. The detailed project report in this connection will be prepared and tenders will be invited in a short span, he said.

The CM further said that the state government will try to construct the road in case the NHAI fails to ensure a fast repair of the road. He said the NH33 was an important inter-state link and hence it needed to be in proper condition.

The CM said the highway should not be repaired through patchwork. He said the road should be such that it may be used for commercial and all other purposes.

Soren said checkposts should have been built at various roads. The work will soon be completed. He said quality will be ensured in the construction work. The work should be done according to high standards of quality. He said the road construction should be done in such a way that the rainwater may get absorbed by the soil below. He said the road construction department should have information regarding the year of construction and repair of the road. A perspective plan should be prepared for five years and all work should be carried out accordingly in a planned way.

The Chief Secretary of the state RS Sharma said toll tax could be a major revenue source for the state government. He said the various departments should have mutual coordination for the construction of checkposts. Till March 2014, nine checkposts will be constructed in the state.
