Environmental camp displays liquid manure, green garbage bags at TRF

Jamshedpur, July 1: An environmental awareness camp was conducted at TRF by Dr. Mita Tarafder, senior principal scientist of CSIR-NML along with three volunteers Utkarsh Raj (2nd Year B. Tech, IIT, KGP), Palak Kaur (4th Year B. Tech, MIT, Manipal) and Deepak Dhibar (2nd Year, ITI, Jamshedpur).

The employees of TRF provided a great support to the camp and provided a platform for creating awareness about the “Plastic bag pollution” in the city.

Sharing a simple idea, Dr. Tarafder said, “Plastic bags should be disposed in big piles so that sorting is easy”. This way biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste can be disposed separately.

The items on display were the Green Garbage Bags (GGBs) for disposal of moist kitchen waste, liquid manure, which was made by composting solid waste at home and the home-made compost used for growing plants. This liquid manure and compost are being produced by Dr. Tarafder at her 8th floor flat at Vijaya Garden, Baridih.

These were greatly appreciated by the employees. The employees provided a great support by purchasing these bags. They were also amazed by the idea of generating liquid manure and also placed the order for it. This was a good experience for the volunteers to learn how to be responsible towards the society.

The income generated will be used to support the women and the education of the needy children. This would be of a great help in uplift of the society if such camps are organized all over the country.

Quoting Mother Teresa, She said, “Love is not patronizing and charity isn’t about pity, it is about love. Charity and love are the same – with charity you give love, so don’t just give money but reach out your hand instead.”

This saying is greatly implemented by Dr. Mita Tarafder. On approval of CSIR-NML, she established a NGO named Relearn Foundation in 2015 which supports women for enhancing their earning potential and education of under privileged children of Digital Literacy Mission (DLM).

Under the mentorship of Prof Prabal Kumar Sen, chairperson, Entrepreneurship Development Centre of XLRI, Jamshedpur, the NGO works in the areas of education, environment and empowerment.
