Jamshedpur: District administration launched a campaign against food adulteration, especially in sweets, on Friday by conducting surprise inspection of shops selling sweets in the city.

A team of district food safety department led by food inspector Mahesh Pandey visited Shukla Misthanna Bhandar and Kolkata Sweets at Azad Market, Telco, and examined the stocks.

Samples of khowa, chhena, cheese and other milk products used in the kitchen of the shops were collected for laboratory testing. They were taken from the sweet shop and godown of the two establishments.

Sources said the inspection drive was launched following the directive of the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum Dr Amitabh Kaushal. The DC had asked the food inspector to launch a campaign against adulteration in the city much ahead of Deepawali.

Members of Narendra Modi Youth Brigade had earlier demanded stringent action against food adulteration by the district administration.

They had complained that increasing use of adulterated food material in making sweets and other preparations sold in the market was posing a serious health hazard in the city.

Lack of regular inspection and prosecution had led the culprits to continue adulteration, they said.
