Jamshedpur : The Bodhi Society Sakchi on Sunday celebrated the Kathin ChibarDaan Festival with a day long programme.
Banna Gupta, state agricultural minister was the chief guest for the programme. About 800 people participated in the day long programme that started in the morning.
The Utsav is celebrated after a three-month-long Varsabrata that begins from Ashadhi purnima which is the full moon day in July and concludes on Aashini purnima, the full moon day in October which also co-incides with Kojagari Laxmi puja.
The buddhist community thus organises the Daan Utsav where the devotees donate clothes to monks today.
The last day of Varsabrata is Pravarana. Buddhist monks of the city and two — one monk and another nun from Bangkok participated in this event in the city today.
Kathin Chibar Daan, the biggest religious festival of the Buddhist community. Various programmes, includuing stitching of chibars, offering of pancha-shilla prayer, hoisting Buddhist flag, dyeing and drying of threads and lighting of candles, was chalked out to mark the celebration.
Over 2500 years ago, nurses of Goutam Buddha named Jibok and Bishakha with the help of devotees, had introduced making rob from jhum cotton within 24-hour to offer it to monks. Since then Buddhist have been observing it.
