Jamshedpur : All police stations across the district will now have to register FIRs for all kinds of cybercrime reported in their jurisdiction at their respective cyber cells starting from April 1. Concerned over the rising hi-tech, cybercrime cases, the State Police have decided to strengthen its mechanism for controlling cybercrime.
Zonal IG Naveen Kumar Singh, who is in city to review law and order situation in the district said that they will ensure that all the cybercrime cases are registered in the police stations itself starting from April 1.
�Our department is working to strengthen its mechanism. In the past four months we have been able to arrest 300 accused involved in cybercrimes. The police administration is focused on controlling such cases,� noted Singh. He informed that they are also framing strategy to curb ATM frauds in association with bank authorities.
Sources informed that polices officials are being imparted training on seizure and collection of digital evidence, investigation in social networking sites, ATM and credit card fraud.
With the city going hi-tech, cybercrime cases are also on the rise. The crime has shot up this year, going by the increasing number of petitions and complaints that the police are receiving.
Sources in the city police said complaints of hacking of email accounts and complaints of people falling prey to phishing mails or becoming a victim of other online frauds have been reported.
The latest trend in cybercrime is that of sending e-mails announcing job offers i.e., appointment letters from reputed companies wherein the prospective candidates are asked to responding to the mail for a job in upcountry destinations with reputed corporates.
“Jamshedpur is one of the most vulnerable cities in the country as people here are generally ignorant,” said a cyber security expert.
“As per our findings passwords are usually very ‘weak’. There is no concept of ‘penetration tests’ in the city in which IT systems are challenged by professional hackers and then the loopholes are rectified. Besides, pirated software programmes and other factors have also added to the problem,” he noted.
A senior police official pointed out that people should be aware of the recruitment processes of major companies in order to avoid being duped. They should also come forward to prefer a complaint rather than withdrawing into a shell and being secretive about the whole incident. Their complaints will help saving other people from becoming victims, he added.
