Jamshedpur, July 31: Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Sunday unveiled two mobile eye surgical units (MESU) provided by Sankara Nethralaya of Chennai, at the Tata Main Hospital.
The Sankara Nethralaya Mobile Eye Surgical Unit inaugurated here today, is the first such unit in the country after Chennai, where a mobile eye surgical unit is in operation since 2012.
The Chief Minister hailed the founder of Sankara Nethralaya Hospital and Padma Bhusan recipient Dr S S Badrinath for launching the mobile eye surgical unit in the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Das said, �The MESU (Mobile Eye Surgical Unit) project will first be launched in Chaibasa and if successful, it will be implemented in the whole of Jharkhand.�
He welcomed Dr. S.S. Badrinath, the chairman of Sankara Nethralaya to Jamshedpur and Jharkhand and requested him to see the possibilities of setting up of unit of Sankara Netralaya at Ranchi.
He mentioned about other medical initiatives being taken by the government and said that in the next 4-5 years Jharkhand will become a healthy Jharkhand.
Bidyut Baran Mahato spoke about the concern of the Chief Minister about a year back on how to reach medical care to villages and said that today, his wish was being fulfilled.
Saryu Rai, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs, spoke about the benefits of nursing and said that today nursing was important not only in hospitals but also in homes. He congratulated the state government and Tatas for this venture.
At the function, the chairman of Sankara Nethralaya, Dr S.S. Badrinath was also present and addressed the gathering. He said his hospital has a good team of eye surgeons and doctors who provide world class treatment for the people suffering from various eye ailments.
Dr. Badrinath spoke on how each patient today spends more time in care of nurses and hence this profession was requiring more and more competent people. On the MESU project he said that this was a complication free process and a good way to tackle the issue of blindness where major cause is cataract.
While addressing the gathering Chief Minister informed that renowned hear surgeon Dr Devi Shetty will set up a cardiac treatment centre at Ranchi soon.
He said that a portion of Sadar Hospital in Ranchi will be given to Dr Shetty for setting up a heart care unit, the spade work for which will begin tomorrow (August 1). Air Marshal (Dr) Rajan Chaudhry (Retd) GM Medical Services, Tata Steel proposed a vote of thanks.
Tata Steel also launched MESU, a medico-engineering project and �one-of-its-kind in Asia� operating theatre on wheels. MESU is a collaborative venture between Sankara Nethralaya and IIT Madras with the support from Tata Trusts and Tata Steel.
Equipped with the state-of-the-art eye care facilities, MESU is the only project where the Government of India has allowed ophthalmic surgeries in camp mode. Jamshedpur will be the base for Jharkhand�s MESU facilities, catering primarily to rural patients in remote locations.
The Chennai-based MESU unit has screened over 16,000 patients and operated over 3,000 in rural and tribal areas of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, without any complications.
