Jadugoda: Not withstanding tall claims of district officials regarding status of drinking water availability, children of Pondakocha Upgraded Primary School in Matigora panchayat are a harried lot. The school kids have to travel one kilometer to get drinking water and mid-day meal.
Sources said although there are hand-pumps in the school, but the water coming out of them is not fit for drinking. “These hand-pumps yield dirty water. As the water is not clean enough, children have to bring the same from far away sources daily,” sources said.
The drinking water problem is not faced by children of Pondakocha Upgraded School alone. Children studying in Kulamara village of Matigora panchayat too, have to depend on far-off sources of water.
Surprisingly, their problem continues as complaints made to the block education officer and district superintendent of education are yet to bear fruit.
The village head Kartik Hembram alleged that the education department officials have been contacted several times regarding the problems related to civic amenities. But so far no positive action has been taken to give relief to the children.
“New hand-pumps should be installed in place of old ones as the quality of water available to children is below safe limit. Who will take the responsibility if children suffer from water-borne disease as a consequence?
The responsibility will be solely that of the authorities concerned,” the Mukhia warned.
