Jamshedpur: District traffic police today launched a campaign against violators of traffic norms by conducting surprise checking of vehicles at various city places including Sakchi, Bistupur, Jugsalai and Burmamines.

Several vehicles were confiscated by the police after their drivers were found sans helmet and necessary documents, sources said.

Traffic police officials said most vehicles seized by them were found to be without proper number plates. The number plates on the front of the vehicles were found not to bear the registration number as mandatory for all vehicles according to traffic norms, officials said. Many drivers were found not wearing helmet and overloading in terms of the total number of passengers.

Not wearing helmet and violating the restriction on allowing more than three persons on a bike are the commonest problems in the city.

Besides many motorists either do not have valid driving licence or their motor vehicle insurance policy is not renewed, said a traffic police officer on duty.

Traffic police officials said the campaign would continue indefinitely across the city to prevent largescale violation of traffic norms.

They said the campaign would be intensified in order to make the violators pay fine which may work as a deterrent for others raring to jump rules at the slightest pretext.
