Jamshedpur : Prashaant Ranganathan, a class X student of Carmel Junior College has made it to the prestigious Google Science Fair.
His research method of using iron oxide as a growth promoter in plants has helped him to bring laurels.
The 16-year-old who have been on his research for the past nine-months have used a unique method to use iron oxide which enhances the chlorophyll and increases photosynthesis in plants.
He now awaits a Skype interview in his second where a scientist (judge) will interact with him and ask him questions on his research between July 14 and 18. The results of the second round will be announced on Aug 4.
The Google Science Fair is one of the prestigious global online science and technology competitions open to students between 13 and 18 years.
This year there have been more than 10,000 entries out of which this Jamshedpur boy have found a place in the top 90. He is also among the only 11 from India and the only one from the East.
The Xth grader conducted this experiment on wheat and barley at home and he found that the germination rate, shoot growth and mass of plants were enhanced by at least 50 per cent in wheat and up to 100 per cent in barley by this process.
