CAAJ: At last a hope for Jharkhand cine artistes

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur: Talents in the realms of acting abound in Jharkhand. There are many among them who have performed in feature, tele and short films with distinction but have remained consigned within the crevices of nonentity. Some of course, realizing the ‘no-go’ situation opted out of their home territory and shifted base to Mumbai and Kolkata to try and push their talent in these dream cities. Some came off good but others continue to struggle. On this dotted line of fate stand talents with dreams of making it big as actors on the screen; they survive between the extremes of hopes and disenchantment.
But at last, a light at the end of the tunnel for film actors has started glowing. A group of committed and dedicated who’s who of the cine medium in terms of acting has come out with Cine Artistes Association of Jharkhand (CAAJ). The ad hoc committee comprises educational and cultural activist Sukhdev Mahto and Javed Akhtar as Chairmen, Bollywood actor Md Habib who has his roots in Jamshedpur as President, actor Shontu Banerjee and cinematographer and film editor Partho Bhattacharya (Vice Presidents), Somnath Chakraborty (General Secretary), actors Amit Das and Masrur Siddique (Secretaries), actor Md Shamim ‘Ulfat’ (Treasurer) with Sanchari Dutta, Tollywood actor Faiz Khan, Uday Sahu and Rajesh Kumar as executive committee members. Bollywood actor Jai Mishra and popular Tollywood filmmaker and Take5 Communications COO Tathagat Bhattacherjee will be the CAAJ advisers.
At a press meeting convened on Saturday, CAAJ Chairman Sukhdev Mahto spelt out the two major objectives of the platform. He said, “Often actors are unable to go in for medical treatment due to paucity of funds. The few friends they have contribute whatever they can but in cases of severe ailments, the enormous costs become too heavy a burden to bear. CAAJ’s prime objective is to go in for group insurance so that no actor n the state languishes due to fund crunch. The second prime concern of our platform is to ensure dignity of the actor members. CAAJ will ensure that the Jharkhand artistes selected by production teams from other places or even indigenous units pay the selected artistes as per contract and treat them with respect. The units will not be allowed to shoot and leave our state locations without clearing the payments of our performing artistes.”
President Md Habib said, “My roots are in Jamshedpur and I have learned the basic nuances of performance from my Steel City. When I heard about the plight of cine artistes in Jharkhand, I felt sad and concerned. I discussed the matter with the senior artistes and people in the know and we agreed that group insurance for health security and dignity of actors would be our foremost objective. Thus we formed CAAJ.”
Vice Presidents Shontu Banerjee and Partho Bhattacharya informed that a general body meeting would be held soon to constitute a formal executive body. CAAJ will be registered in accordance with the labor laws and the Association would be affiliated to the national film body of actors.
The vote of thanks was offered by Assistant Secretary Amit Das.
