Jamshedpur: Dimna Road was blocked for several hours on Saturday afternoon following the death of a 30 year old man, identified as Shankar Gorai, after being run over by a bus. Irked over the incident, a mob comprising local residents and commuters blocked the road to demand Rs 5 lakh and a job in compensation to the next of kin of the deceased and arrest of the errant driver.
Sources said the deceased, a mechanic, was on his way to Road Number 1, Sankosai, for lunch from a truck garage near Hume Pipe Busti at Bhuiyandih.
Police said the bus was overcrowded with passengers and was on its way to Bara Bazar. After knocking down the victim, the bus driver sped up the vehicle. In the hasty bid to escape, the driver ran the bus over the victim whose head was crushed severely.
At a distance of barely 50 metres, the driver got off the bus and fled the scene. The victim was taken to MGM Hospital where he succumbed to critical injuries, sources said.
The irked mob vandalized the bus and blocked the road by felling large branches and trunks of trees on the way. Small vehicles were also stopped from passing through the accident scene.
The jam was removed after the MNAC special officer Sanjay Kumar reached the scene and assured to give Rs 20,000 as ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased. Kumar said adequate compensation as per government rules would be given to the aggrieved family.
Sources said Shankar Gorai is survived by his five year old son, three year old daughter and wife Sunita Gorai. Sunita is expecting her third child and has no other source of income, sources said.
