BJP seals pre-Assembly poll pact with AJSU

Ranchi: BJP on Monday clinched an alliance with All Jharkhand Students Unions for Jharkhand Assembly elections under which its junior partner will contest eight of the 81 seats in the state.

In an important development, BJP has claimed, among the 73 seats, Hatia, the constituency of sitting AJSU MLA Naveen Jaisawal, who expressed dismay over the decision. Jaisawals supporters burnt the effigy of AJSU president Sudesh Mahato on Monday. Now AJSU will field its five sitting candidates along with three others.

AJSU chief Sudesh Mahto today met BJP president Amit Shah and both sealed the tie-up following the recommendation of BJP’s state unit, informed BJP general secretary Bhupinder Yadav, who is also in charge of Jharkhand affairs.
“BJP has decided to tie up with like-minded parties. The decision was taken following talks between AJSU and the state leadership,” Yadav said.

The BJP’s decision to tie up with the AJSU has disappointed former minister and party leader Dulal Bhuiyan who expected to get a ticket from Jugsalai constituency. Bhuiyan held meeting with his supporters at his residence and left for Ranchi Monday evening to meet JMM leaders.

BJP had issued its first list of candidates on Sunday, but had not announced names for five seats, which AJSU had won in last elections along with Hatia which has been claimed by the BJP.

AJSU has earlier been part of BJP-led coalition governments in the state but this is the first time both parties will have a pre-poll alliance.

Assembly polls in Jharkhand besides Jammu and Kashmir will be held in five phases between November 25 and December 20 and counting of votes is scheduled for December 23.
