Jamshedpur : Jamshedpur is on the third position in the State where 65 rape cases were reported in eight months during 2013.

The startling facts were revealed out by the State police to the Jharkhand High Court recently in an affidavit replying to a notice issued against it seeking total number of rape cases which took place in the current year.

According to the police records, a total of 917 cases of rape have been reported since January to August, 2013 in Jharkhand.

After Sahebganj and Ranchi, Jamshedpur stood third as the most unsafe places for women in the State, but sociologists and police officials attributed the rising number of rape cases to a new found awareness among the rape survivors in the backwaters of the country to report such cases.

The parents and the family are now coming in the open to report such incidents to the police, they said.Even cases relating to cheating minor girls in the guise of love and marriage too have gone up.

Experts blame it on inactive police administration which is said to be indifferent to control criminal activities and influx of criminals from outside. The situation has fast changed in our city. Women are not feeling safe now. Steps need to be taken to ensure their protection.

I am of the opinion that failure of police in arresting rape accused and people’s reluctance to file FIR regarding rape are some of the factors behind rising molestation cases, Alpna Chakravarty says, an activist working for NGO.A police official said that crime can not be controlled till there is a change in human consciousness.

However, police are trying to give exemplary punishment to criminals. We need to hold discussions in high schools and colleges, in forums where films are screened and discussed.

We need to have women police arrest men who harass women, said the social worker.Cases of rape of minors and molestation of women have been reported for fringe areas especially like Parsudih and Bagbera.

During the past one month, six cases of rape and five cases of molestation have been reported with the Parsudih and Babgera police stations areas alone.

Recently a 17-year-old girl resident of Baghbera police station area has lodged an attempt to rape case against the son of her house owner on Monday.

The girl has alleged that while she was going out to her aunt’s house, located nearby, on Sunday evening the accused, Pankaj Yadav, lured her to the backyard on pretext of some work and tried to outrage her modesty.
