Jamshedpur: A 40 year-old woman, identified as Panchami Devi alias Shephali, wife of Shersingh Gorai, was murdered allegedly by her brother-in-law last midnight.

Police arrested the accused, identified as Birbal Gorai, 45, from Premnagar locality under Telco police station area in the wee hours of Sunday.

The accused, taken into custody by police, is a resident of Premnagar.

According to police, the accused who owns a grocery shop at Premnagar had put Shefali’s body into a sack which he dumped into bushes about one kilometre away from his house after carrying it in a car.

Shocked by the incident, Shefali’s husband Shersingh informed the police about the incident late night. Soon a police team was rushed to nab the culprit who later spilled the beans and told police about the place where he had dumped the sack containing the body.

The officer-in-charge of Telco police station, Jayant Tirkey said, “We are investigating the incident. We are looking into all aspects before reaching to a conclusion. We have recovered the body after registering a complaint by the victim’s husband Shersingh.”

Tirkey said the accused killed the woman by hitting with an LPG cylinder when she was reportedly asleep.

The victim’s son, Deepak Gorai, said his uncle had killed his mother after branding her to be a witch.

“All was not well in our family. A year ago my grandfather died after a brief illness. Then my uncle had declared that my mother was responsible for his death as she is a witch. He had even threatened to kill my mother,” said Deepak, who works in Tata Motors.

Sources said the families of both Birbal Gorai and Shersingh Gorai reside at the same house in Premnagar. When Birbal runs a grocery shop at the Premnagar market, the younger brother Shersingh would work in a private company.

Sharing the events leading to the heinous crime, Deepak said that when he returned home the door of his uncle locked from outside and there was no trace of his mother. On inspecting the house, he found bloodstains inside the kitchen.

Only then he along with father went to the Telco police station and informed the police. As a police party started searching my mother, they saw uncle’s car on the way.

After an hour-long probe, the accused admitted that he has killed her and concealed the body in a sack before carrying to an isolated place beside a pond in Telco area.
