120 two-wheeler riders fined on first day of vehicle checking

Jamshedpur, March 18: In wake of incidents of crimes and road mishaps, the district police has launched a massive vehicle-checking drive in the city from Friday.

The traffic police along with the local police undertook the drive during which about 120 two-wheel riders were prosecuted for not wearing helmets and triple-riding and also for driving without driving-license in the operation that continued for four hours.

The checking drive was carried out simultaneously at Jugsalai, Bistupur, Sonari, Kadma, Golmuri, Telco, Agrico and Mango. During the drive, the jawans of Rapid Action Force (RAF), Special Auxiliary Police (SAP) and District police were pressed into service.

DSP (Traffic) Vivekananda Thakur said the drive was aimed at tightening noose of criminal as well as anti-social elements active in the city.

Talking about the significance of helmet-checking, he said the rise in numbers of vehicles in the city have gone up tremendously, thus giving rise to the accidents. He pointed out that the road accidents take place primarily due to rash-driving, which they would try to check by every means.

“The Police department will work hard to ensure that every two-wheeler rider wears a helmet, as using the helmet always reduces the chances of the road mishaps getting fatal. We will do everything that may prevent them from meeting a fatal mishap,” said another police official.

Sources also informed that traffic policing during the beginning and end of No-entry time will be made severe as it has been seen that the most of the road mishaps are taking place during the period when the “no-entry” gets through.

The senior police officer revealed that the car-drivers using cell-phone while driving also at times cause road mishaps. He claimed that the next time they would start catching those car-drivers who use cell-phone while driving on the city roads.

Thakur said that a drive is also being conducted for seat-belt checking across the city. Such drive against the car-owners will continue until the drivers make it a habit for the car drivers to fix seat-belts before setting out.
